Rina’s Maths learning Story
The Problem:
Unveiling
Marino and Julie are in Rarotonga celebrating her Mum’s
unveiling.  235 people were invited to the celebration but then
68 people didn’t show up.  How many people came to the
unveiling?

What different ways can you solve this problem?

How we solved the problem:
First I drew my equation to find out
235-68=

Then I split the 68 into 35 and 33 because I wanted to take away the 35 from the 235 to get
200 so it's easier.
 235-35=200
200-33=167
235-68=167

I could prove this by using a number line.
          35 33

Finally, I proved those 235-68=167 people that came to Marino’s unveiling.

Working as a group is important:  Choose 2 to write about
I am good at….  because….
I am getting better at ….. because …..
It’s hard for me …… because …...
I need to work on because….

I'm good at explaining my ideas so my team understands.

It's hard for me to keep my group on track because when the teacher comes then they listen
to me. Some strategies I use is “hurry snap back to the work”.

Kapahaka

So what I am going to be talking about is kapahaka. Last year when I first did kapahaka it was really hard but this year I am getting better at it and kapahaka is really cool. That's why I went back to kapahaka because I like doing the hakas, singing and dancing and I like listening to Maori songs. Also sometimes when we go to kapahaka sometimes it’s scary because last week the line I was in had to come to the front and do Tu-Mai-Ra and that was so challenging but I did it anyway. When we finished doing the haka, I felt like I was going to join the senior kapahaka but I didn't, I stayed in social kapahaka.

The Problem:
Tickets for Matatini
On Saturday, Kate and Sophia took some students to watch
Matatini for the day.  There were 4 adults and 9 children.
How much did Kate pay for the tickets?

One Day Pass
4 Day Pass
Youth (Under 16)
$22
$55
Matua (Adults)
$43
$100
Kaumatua (Elders)
$22
$55
How we solved the problem:
First I drew my equation for the 4 adults and the 9 kids.

43x4=
22x9=

Then I drew a T-chart and did 43 to start with tickets because that's how much to pay for one
ticket for one adult.

Then for the students, I’m going to do a t-chart as I did for the adults and do 22 to start for the
tickets because how much to pay for one ticket for one student.

Then last I am going to add them up so

190+170=360
2+8=10
360+10=370

198+172=370

Finally, I found out that Kate had to pay 370 dollars for everyone’s tickets.

Tivaevae

Before you start to making the tivaevae you have to make sure your hands are
not dirty so it does not stain the tivaevae. You need to make sure you know
what you are doing, what your patterns are going to be and to also make sure
you know what colours you are going to use. You need to know how to make a
tivaevae also to make sure you even know how to sew a pattern onto your
tivaevae. You also have to be careful when you are sewing the pattern onto the
tivaevae. You would need to know what to do when you're at home making the
rest of the tivaevae. You need to use teamwork because it takes about a whole
month or 3 months.

I think we could show teamwork like whenever someone is stuck on something you help them and explain it not do it or else that means you’re not helping, you're just doing their work.

A Home in the Sky

Play learning story

Puppets

Last week I went to the hall and played around like playing basketball and
jumping off this wood thingy onto the mattress which was fun. I was playing
with Abigail, Lincoln and Seiola. Then we went to room 4 and started to look
at what everyone was doing in there. We saw Sheryl, Ierei and also Marino
making sculptures or something like that. Then I, Abigail and Seiola started
to make puppets too and made a show and it was so cool.

Dress up

Once this year when we had Play, I saw Lincoln, Darius, Rougan and Luchiano
playing this game and I think they were trying to act like gangsters or
something else  But then Rougan let me and Lijacana dress him up so that's
what we did but we dressed him kinda like a gingerbread man. Then Lincoln
comes and says to Luchiano and Darius, “We are the bullies. Get him!” Well,
I think he said that. Then they started chasing Rougan around and around until they catch him.
